PARTICIPATION

Proposed work as accepted for soundpedro 2020:

Paradigm Shift
Digital Animation: Paradigm Shift abstractly represents the fluctuating progression of change that governs social, cultural, and environmental systems. Every so often a radical alteration to the basic fabric of existing structures and beliefs ushers in a new way of thinking. These changes sometimes evolve from pre-existing principles, practices, or complex systems and ultimately replace the entities from which they were derived. Other times they appear suddenly out of nowhere and drastically upset the fundamental essence of our being. The circumstances that precipitate these radical alterations are often invisible until the shift is recognized, while other times they are expected outcomes of innovation and growth. This animation brings the audience on a journey through these disruptive intrusions and peaceful passages in a quest to reveal the beauty of change.

Paradigm Shift’s abstract electroacoustic soundtrack merges synthetic and recorded sounds to reflect the visual landscape’s ebb and flow. The sonic environment supports and enhances often unexpected shifts between disruptive intrusions and peaceful passages, promoting a cohesive visual music experience. As the sound and visuals evolve simultaneously, they challenge the viewer’s ideas and expectations concerning each element’s role in promoting or subverting possible unity, divergence, consonance, dissonance, progress, interruption, or termination — the viewer’s visual/sonic journey becomes the paradigm shift.

Sweeping Memories
Digital Animation: Sweeping Memories abstractly journeys through the past, referencing the emotional aftermath of various types of events: from celebration to trauma. Emotional stimuli heightens memory retention yet the act of recalling memories rewrites them thus forming new experiential references.

Sweeping Memories also seeks to evoke emotional responses through the use of the elements and principles of art and music. The viewer is swept from one psychological state to another as particles, geometric forms and organic shapes evolve in color and textural quality. Throughout the piece anticipation builds slowly eventually culminating in a heightened sense of tension until the screen anxiously bursts open only to reveal a new set of memories. These abstract audio and visual environments help to evoke the way our memories transform into new sensorial and contextual experiences.
