Soundscapes [audio tracks] On-site and online June 4th
Outside Tatum is a piece in an ongoing series of improvisations using live electronics to process and loop field recordings. These improvisations treat environment sounds as artistic co-creators rather than sounds separate from “music,” aiming to improvise with the natural soundscape in which the composer finds himself. All of the electronic processing was performed by the composer using Max/MSP alongside the live field recordings with very little post-production. The title, like all pieces in this series, refers to the location where the piece was recorded: outside Tatum Café in Santa Clarita.
Jack Herscowitz is a Los Angeles based composer, improviser, and sound artist who engages deep inter-personal collaborations, trans-disciplinary thinking, and alternate definitions of “score” to recognize music as a process which has always extended beyond the singular dimension of sound. His work runs the wide gamut of interactive sound installations, enveloping vocal soundscapes, noisy electronic improvisations, theatrical chamber music, and communal spaces for sound making. Jack is pursuing an M.F.A. in Composition and Experimental Sound Practices at CalArts and holds a B.A. in Music and Environmental Studies from Middlebury College.
