Summer afternoon in a migrant camp in Tijuana
This soundscape recreates an afternoon inside the migrant refugee camp in Tijuana, where more than 500 South American refugee migrants have founded a small city a few meters from the border with the United States; waiting day by day for the border to open for them.
Phantom voices
This soundscape is located in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, where the mythical train La Bestia departs from. In the background, you can hear the train, which will carry the hopes of many migrants to reach the north. Simultaneously, you can hear testimonies of migrants explaining why they risk their lives on the journey to the United States.
Alvaro Diaz-Rodriguez is a full-time research professor at the Faculty of Arts at the UABC, Mexico. His research focuses on sound studies. He has a Ph.D. in Musicology and is a member of the National System of Art Creators 2023- 2025 by the Secretary of Culture of the Government of Mexico.
He has recently received the awards: Sound of the Year Award 2021; Ecos Sonoros 2021 Award by the Mexican Ministry of Culture; Selected in the Triennial of Latin American Art in New York 2022; and Special Mention at Le Concours international 60 Secondes Radio 2021.
As a sound artist, he has focused on linking the soundscape with the social contexts of its inhabitants to create a portrait of society through sound.
