PARTICIPATION
Foco is a live deconstruction of an overwhelming mass of sound, video and image (“wall of media”) through movement and audience interaction. A live coder programs sound and visuals in real time, while a dancer modifies them using motion sensors. The audience can open seams in the wall of media using provided diy game-like controllers. The live coder wears a flexible OLED screen, showing the code they are typing with the audience. The effect of the audience’s controllers increases until the wall of media is reduced to a wave, a point, a static pose.
Foco challenges traditional ideas of technological ownership, and highlights a current need for citizens to have better control over the media we are exposed to. Glitch, instability, and shared raw creative process are embraced, inspired by Free and Open Source Software values.
