Nothing Resonates is a gripping menagerie of found sounds, layered with croaking frogs and straining air vents. It features mundane sounds like brushing one’s teeth and running water, which are sped-up and distorted to reflect an unrecognizable, inhospitable environment in the wake of dissociation. The piece drags-in listeners with a permeating feeling of a lack of control, yet it’s simultaneously very dreamlike, fluid, and surreal. Additionally touching on aging and the inescapable reality of death, the work takes a more structured form at the end of the piece. This “moblilization of noise” culminates into a conclusion of the narrative, with listeners being pulled from the surrealist haze invoked in the first half, to be met with a cataclysmic barrage of sound. Rising from the bowels of some deep hell, the piece’s ending is jarring, but it’s certainly terminal. Eager, and spiteful, it exacts revenge without a doubt.
