PARTICIPATION
Residual Stasis
In this piece, I explore the tension between what is held and what is lost. The composition serves as a meditation on
residual stasis—the quiet, humming weight left behind when a primary action ceases.
Through a sparse piano melody processed via heavy reverberation, delay, and tape manipulation, I have crafted an environment where the passage of time is measured not by a clock, but by the erosion of clarity. As melodic signals repeat, the physical degradation of the tape causes them to fray, dissolving into a textured “persistence” where the boundary between intentional music and accidental noise disappears. This work invites the listener to sit within these decaying thresholds, finding beauty not in the strike of the key, but in the ghostly, static-filled vibration that remains. It is an exploration of the sonic afterlife, where the memory of a note becomes as tangible as the silence it eventually inhabits.
A Time To Enjoy Life Far Removed From Daily Existence is an exercise in intentional stillness. This evocative work seeks to bridge the gap between the listener and a state of deep meditation through the use of tape manipulation.
The foundation of the piece consists of long, pulsing tones that swell and recede with a rhythmic cadence reminiscent of deep breathing. These sounds are derived from analog magnetic tape, where the physical medium is slowed, stretched, and layered to reveal the hidden harmonic depth of a singular moment. By focusing on these organic fluctuations, the music encourages a detachment from linear time and the frantic pace of modern life. It creates a soundscape where the only constant is the vibration itself, offering a sanctuary for reflection and a quiet space to inhabit a life far removed from the noise of daily existence.

Aaron West is a composer and sound theorist exploring the thresholds between signal, noise, and time. His practice utilizes analog tools—reel-to-reel tape, cassettes, and modular synthesis—to create immersive landscapes where clarity dissolves into static. By blending the organic resonance of piano and violin with raw electricity, West constructs evolving sonic environments rooted in texture.
With a global career spanning the U.S., Europe, and Russia, West treats sound as a living, decaying entity. His work ranges from abrasive ruptures to meditations on spectral erosion, pushing the boundaries of analog soundscapes and the “long echo” of our sonic past.
