PARTICIPATION
dialogues of|through|in despair
this work draws on explorations of what despair sounds like and how sound can be used to resist despair.
we have witnessed how militarized violence impacts the soundscapes of our city.
we’ve also seen how PPE has been transformed from labor and virus protection to protection from tear gas.
our installation is inspired by a health department PPE safety training for respirator use, where participants read a poem that causes the face to move drastically which helps to verify that their PPE is fitted. we then use linguistic theorems to degrade the signals of the original script and map those degradations to sound signals. participants will also have ways to interact with the installation by interacting with common objects (whistles, buttons, megaphones, etc) to see how they can change the sound of despair.

sister sface is a collective of mostly microbial organisms. once born in a valley, they now coexist by the sea, where they whisper incantations for simple gifts.
