PARTICIPATION
ROOTS AND DEMONS
Our performance merges visual art and sound, fostering collaboration and interpretation. Two Japanese screens stand as canvases and stage. Musicians positioned behind these backlit screens respond spontaneously to brushstrokes painted by participants using black sumi ink from the front.
Themes often guide the work; we plan to explore the “chthonic” underworld with brushstrokes forming tree roots that cradle surreal, hidden dokkaebi (Korean demons).
Our collaborative painting projects are unpredictable, chaotic beautiful unruly end-products. This turmoil cultivates empathy, as participants discover the power of working together in unexpected ways. The collaboration teaches a new kind of language, where visual language of paint informs auditory language of sound, the translation from one language of visual gestures into the language of high and low notes, tones, pulses, quick chords and sustained drones and rhythms.

LUMINARIA
The rainstorm poured down on the night of her memorial. Throughout the neighborhood, LUMINARIA sprouted across curbs and sidewalks, flickering in the downpour. LUMINARIA was originally an online interactive poem for a family member who was murdered in her home in 2024. It is generated from photos of the memorial evening, and AI videos based on those images.

Urban Crop Circle is an artists collective that collaborates with public participants to create unique works of art focusing upon processes and concepts. They are most interested in social service practices that enhance neighborhoods and in public discourse that educates interactively. Plus they like to build fun, wild art objects with total strangers.
