Brooke Peters is a multidisciplinary artist exploring themes of non-human intelligence, evolution, speciesism, alternative archaeology, and more. Materials utilized in the work aim to convey a quality of magnetism. Her trinity of ingredients all contain metal – ceramic (minerals) film photography (silver particles) and sheet metal. This is significant because of the natural charge that runs rampant through the universe and every biological being in it. Metal emits, transmits, conducts, surges, etc. Whatever form it takes, it is alive. She feels that by using these materials in her work, she can aspire to create something that is suspended in an energetic field of its own.

obelisk ambulating towards ruin
Aluminum sheet metal creates a large obelisk, with each side of the structure featuring an internal line that traces unique and non-linear walking paths from angel’s gate to the pacific below. The aluminum sheets have all been immersed in the ocean for a while, and the salt water on metal has inevitably resulted in rust. Audio emanates internally, the sound of waves breaking plugged into an audio program to match the drawings on the metal. Red gel covers line the inside of the obelisk and lights are installed inside the piece so that the visual components can be regarded at night. This piece aims to speak to the environmental conundrum taking place in this area, and nods to structures that have been weathered away in spite of the maker’s optimistic intentions.
