How to Desensitize: Attempt One
Audience member individually sits in a chair and is given headphones and a button to press (a la jeopardy). When the button is hit, an aural explanation begins. “The following audio may be intense. Too intense even. If you find yourself needing a break, press the button again and we will play 20 seconds of relaxing sounds. Then the original audio will continue. Use the button as often as you would like”. The 1st audio is a cacophony of clips from news channels, youtube videos, and other sources of audio describing geopolitics, climate change, general conspiracies, etc. The 2nd audio, designed to be relaxing originally, starts as an ambient wash with occasional sound bites involved. If the button is pressed again, it slowly becomes more cacophonous and pulls sounds from the original audio. Eventually, if pressed too many times, the audio becomes indistinguishable from the original. The piece ends after 7 minutes with the same voice as the beginning. “Thank you for listening, remember to be the change you want to be in the world.” As they remove the headphones, I will thank them for their time and give them a lollipop (optional on the lollipop if covid prevents). Between people, I will sanitize the equipment.
